Enabling environment assessments
As we approach the end of a busy year, we’re excited to share drafts of our synthesis reports analyzing enabling policy and legal frameworks across five countries in relation to our 14 TLI principles. These principles encompass governance, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and societal well-being, aimed at fostering integrated solutions for systemic change, supporting smallholder integration, and promoting agro-ecological and circular production practices along the supply chain.
Our insights are based on a thorough literature review, which has helped us draw valuable lessons and implications for multi-stakeholder platforms (MSPs) and communities of practice (COP). This work is vital for driving transformations in land-based investments in #Ethiopia 🇪🇹, #Ghana 🇬🇭, #Laos 🇱🇦, #Mozambique 🇲🇿, and #Myanmar 🇲🇲.
We conducted a two-stage literature review to assess the enabling environment for TLI in each country. Initially, we gathered relevant legislation regarding land and land-based investments, coding them against our 14 TLI principles to identify legal provisions. The second phase focused on peer-reviewed studies that examine the real-world impacts of land-based agricultural investments on tenure, food security, and social well-being.
Our analysis compared legal frameworks with practical observations from the literature to provide actionable insights for MSPs and COP. Throughout this year, our country-based MSPs have consistently met to evaluate the enabling environment for transformative land investment and to contribute feedback on our desk review. The draft publications are the result of this collaborative process, with concise briefing notes set to be released in early 2025.
